Tips for choosing the perfect dining set

The dining room is often the centre of a home. There are so many available options, varying from different styles, shapes, and materials. Spend some time researching the best dining set for your home with the help of our buying guide!

Things to consider when looking for a dining set

A dining set consists of two major pieces of furniture – a table and complementary chairs. There are a few things to consider, such as the size, material, shape and number of chairs. We'll walk you through all the steps!

How to choose the right size for your dining set

The first part of this process begins with the measurements of your dining area. When you have the length and width of the room, leave at least 100 cm of space around the dining set. This is a standard measurement to leave enough space for peole to move around the furniture. A dining layout following these size guidelines allows the space to breathe.

The other thing to consider when choosing the perfect dining set is the number of people you’ll accommodate. If you enjoy social gatherings and often host dinner parties, keep this in mind before buying. Nonetheless, if you’d rather relax with your friends, choose a dining set with 4 to 6 chairs. You can always add extra (folding) chairs if needed.

Finding the best dining table shape

A comfortable setup is at least 60 cm in length and 30 cm in width. Based on this rule, some table shapes work better than others.

Round tables, just like square ones, are the perfect option for small spaces. They fit all kinds of interior styles and are great for social interaction.

If your room provides generous space for your dining area, look into oval and rectangular tables. They’re bold, looking impressive, and can accommodate many of your friends. These tables can provide more space for additional chairs.

The importance of dining chairs

There are several options when it comes to dining chairs: swivel chairs, upholstered chairs, stools, or dining benches. To make sure you have plenty of legroom, always keep 30 cm from the tabletop to the chair’s seat.

Smaller tables can fit well next to 4 chairs or stools. Since the number of chairs is limited, you can mix & match.

Rectangular or oval tables allow more chairs – for example up to 10 pieces. A large table is also perfect to combine with a dining bench.

The perfect dining set style for your home

Choosing the perfect dining set is a matter of personal preferences. If you’re into a more traditional style, we recommend wooden pieces. They’re elegant and sturdy, especially in darker shades.

Modern interior designs require simple and clean lines, with great finishes. In terms of materials, go for marble or glass tabletops, or invest in metal bases for both chairs and your table.

If you prefer a more eclectic look, let your dining area be your playground. Experiment with bright colours or use rattan and plastic dining sets. Another way is to opt for a wooden table and add unique vintage-inspired chairs for more charm.

In the end, it all comes down to your personal taste! Choose the dining set that makes you happy every time you look at it. We've added some of our personal favourite below.
