You most likely use your swimming pool most during summer, and in winter, you probably don’t have a big urge to hop in. Therefore, it is important to make sure you give your pool a proper clean before jumping in, especially if you haven’t been cleaning it during the winter season. Regular treatment and maintenance with the right swimming pool chemicals will ensure your pool performs at its peak during the summer season. So, let’s take a look at how you get your pool ready for the days cooling down in your garden:
Remove your pool cover. The arrival of summer means it is time to remove your pool cover and let your pool breathe again. Drain off any water that has collected on the cover, and do your best to make sure this water doesn’t go into the pool. The contaminants in this water can wreak havoc with the pool balance and cause algae growth. Clean your pool cover before you store it away.
Next up, you need to check the water level. If the water level is low, you should give it some water. Leave the pool water to circulate for 24-48 hours.
Once you have the correct water level, we recommend that you get your water tested. This you can simply do by filling a sample bottle with water and getting a water test.
You then need to check the pump, filter and skimmer basket and make sure everything is working properly. If there is any damage, you need to fix it.
The last step is testing pH and sanitiser levels. You can easily do this yourself with a test kit or test strips which you can purchase at vidaXL.
We highly recommend that you follow these steps and use the correct swimming pool chemicals, so it’s crystal clear and ready for use.
There is almost nothing worse than coming out to your swimming pool only to discover that it is green. If you have a problem with a green pool, it is most likely a result of an algae bloom and bacteria in the water. It is important to mention that it is unsafe to swim in a pool that is green. The growth of algae and bacteria can be caused by the following reasons:
Improper filtration. The filter system is responsible for removing debris, including algae. If the filter becomes clogged with debris or contaminants, it won’t be able to filter the water properly, causing algae to bloom.
Incorrect pH balance. Your pool should have a pH balance between 7.2 and 7.8. If the pH balance is higher, the chlorine will be less effective, which allows algae and bacteria to grow, causing the water to turn green.
Phosphates. If your pool has high phosphate levels - and it is not treated - it can lead to algae bloom. Phosphates are essentially food for algae, so you want to avoid high levels of phosphate.
Unfortunately, there is no magic trick for fixing a pool that has turned green. It is a bit of a process, requiring multiple swimming pool chemicals. First things first, make sure you figure out what has caused the pool to turn green. If, for instance, the filter is the problem, you probably need professional help.
Generally speaking, you most likely will need to treat your pool with algaecide and chlorine, which you can purchase at vidaXL. However, if the problem persists even after using the correct swimming pool chemicals, you need to call a professional.
At vidaXL, we offer a wide range of swimming pool chemicals. You will find products such as chlorine and pH tests, pond test strips, filter balls and aqua inspectors.
